‘LIFE 4Doñana’ is a project whose main objective is to demonstrate and foster the adoption of an innovative on-demand Decision Support System (DSS) for soil-based intensive agricultural cultivation that permits to increase irrigation efficiency, reduce water extractions and reduce nutrient use.
LIFE 4Doñana will demonstrate the benefits of this system in commercial strawberry farms in the area of influence of the Doñana National Park (Huelva, Spain) in order to contribute to the sustainability of agricultural production in the surroundings of this internationally-protected wetland complex.
The project, with the contribution of the LIFE Programme of the European Union, runs for 44 months, from September 2020 until April 2024.
New irrigation system
‘LIFE 4Doñana’ is adapting soil-based farms an on-demand irrigation system already developed for substrate (soilless) cultivation systems. This new on-demand system, with significant improvements in monitoring and in the decisión-making algorithm, will also integrate crop needs predictive models.
Demonstration farms
‘LIFE 4Doñana’ is demonstrating the operation and assessing the benefits of the new on-demand system through its implementation in 6 commercial farms of the area of influence of Doñana.
Advisory
‘LIFE 4Doñana’ will provide in-field advisory services on water & nutrient management to strawberry farmers in the area of influence of Doñana.
Virtual Platform
‘LIFE 4Doñana’ offers, through its Virtual Platform, a free on-line Training & Advisory Programme on enhanced irrigation and nutrient management for strawberry farmers & technicians.
